Tyranny Is Tyranny are former members of The United Sons of Toil laying down long-form slabs of bleak dynamics and left-wing outrage. Slather yourself in despair. Tyranny is Tyranny is influenced by the 90s noiserock of Amphetamine Reptile and Touch & Go but also draws inspiration from the post-rock/post-metal hybrids of bands like Cult of Luna and Fall of Efrafa. (Or as one punter quipped "like Explosions In The Sky but metal!")
As hinted at by the titular homage to historian Howard Zinn, the lyrical themes are an excoriation of capitalism.
"This crew of capitalism crushers investigate the territory that lies beyond the noise-rock world, shattering the hypnotic calm of repeated musical phrases with startling dynamic shifts." - Isthmus
"The bands sound very effectively combines Isis sludgy soundscapes with punks furious tempos." - Independent Clauses
"[T]hey hone in on the organic grime of middle-era Neurosis. Its a stretch to tag what Tyranny Is Tyranny does as metal. Instead, theyve taken much of the non-metal pioneering from bands like Neurosis, and repurposed it to add tension to an often-staid Midwestern post-punk template. It's a streamlined version of early Mogwai, building anticipation with darkly melodic guitar riffs, stretched just to the edge of recognition.channeling the middle-90s best specimens rarer-all-the-time mix of tact, restraint and melodic dread." - Just The Tip
"[T]he perfect blend of melodic Midwestern rock in the Shiner/Hum tradition with Neurosisian darkness and the broken glass bastardisms of Am-Rep dirtbags Hammerhead, Tar, Unsane, and early Today is the Day." - Hellride Music
